Good news: there are only two things to master

Once you’ve seen and impressed someone, to ensure you see him again, you only have to master two things:

1. Say the right things…

2. … at the right time

If both of these are right, he’ll see you again. If either’s missing, he probably won’t. Let’s start with the latter first:

The best time to ask for meeting two

The best time to ask for a second meeting is during the first one. That’s right. During it. Not after it. When you think about it, this makes perfect sense: it’s always easier to do things face-to-face than remotely. And, if the meeting has gone well, he may never like you as much again as he does now! So, strike while the iron is hot. If you don’t, in a few days’ time, you’ll have the pestering/impotent dilemma again. It’s just much better to sort it while you’re there.

And don’t let your nerves stop you from asking. Some people think ‘he is so important compared to me… and he was so generous in giving his time to Little Old Me for this first meeting… I don’t want to push it, by asking him for a second one’.

This is not the right way to think! During your meeting, you’ll have helped him. So it’s also in his interest for you to meet again. He isn’t doing you a favour here. There’s a good chance that your practice can help both his firm, and him personally. And, once you realise it’s in his interest to meet again, why wouldn’t you ask him to do so?
